I just pulled the starter on a 2006 Nytro without pulling the engine. Might be the same on your newer sled. Here is what i did:

Remove airbox. Remove battery and holder. Remove primary, for ease of access to front right motor mount bolt. Remove front right motor mount bolt. Remove front left motor mount bolt. Remove brake disc for ease of access to rear motor mount bolt. loosen but didn't remove rear mount nut, on the long bolt that goes all the way across. Remove bottom access cover, remove oil filter. Remove starter lead on starter, remove 2 starter bolts. Lifted engine on the front by the two ears that have holes in them, with ratchet straps. Engine rolls up and forward. But found that i needed to also unbolt the front right mount from the engine to get just enough extra movement on the motor to slide the starter out from underneath the motor, through the oil change service hole in the bottom.

I think there might be enough similarities in the RS chassis over the years to do the same on yours.

Still waiting for the starter to arrive before i start surgery lol. Thanks for the heads up

There have been instances where starters have stayed on after start up causing them to self destruct. Rockmeister has made indicator kits to show if the starter was still engaged.

Well guys i finally recieved that starter and installed it yeasterday. Purrs like a kitten. If anybody else has to put a starter in a rs venture, you do not have to remove anything besides the air box, front motor mounts, steering linkage. oil filter.. There is enough give in the exhaust to tilt the engine so you can get the starter out. It helps with 2 people. The starter bolts are difficult to install but overall went smooth.

Hi Corey, I have a 2009 Venture TF with a bad starter. Is this the same sled that you changed the starter on without removing the motor? Any problem accessing the starter bolts doing it from the oil filter hatch opening? Any help is appreciated, dealer is telling me they only do it via motor removal which is very labor intensive. Thanks, Darren

Don't pull the engine!! I just replaced 2 of them on my vector. Remove front engine mounts and air box and battery box. Put a crow bar on a safe spot on the block and pry forward. It will drop out. I just burned out 2 starters to realize I have a problem with the starter clutch and now I'm wondering how to remove the side casing to get at it. Fun fun fun. $$$

Thanks Sleddog, but too late for me, already pulled my engine. After speaking with Corey from above thread, I tried taking out the starter from the bottom, but it was a no go. I have the fuel injected venture and his was the carb model. I lifted the front of motor as much as possible and still couldn't drop the starter. Been running yamahas for about 24 years and this is really a poor design for changing a starter. For your one-way bearing, I believe you have to take that side cover off the engine so lightly need the engine out for that as well. Good luck and thanks to you and Corey fo trying to help.
