Foods to clear your skin?

The reason why some recipes or foods are better than others for detox is simply because they are foods that will provide the nutrients to give your liver a little break and help it work a bit easier. Some foods are easier to digest than others. You might’ve heard of drinking some lemon water in the morning? That’s why. It helps your liver to digest fats more easily and other functions. Celery is also excellent for the liver and the kidneys (all part of our digestive system).

Our liver processes over 500 functions in our body, which is why it’s such an important organ to take care of. By helping the liver, we affect almost everything in the body, including our skin. So if our liver is working well, our skin will typically also look good, but if we have pimples, rashes, and other skin inflammation on a regular basis, we should ask ourselves if maybe it’s time to change our eating habits and give our liver a little break from foods and drinks that are harder to digest. Ginger and turmeric have natural anti-inflammatory properties, making it great to use regularly in meals, juices, and smoothies.

Detox?

Some people say that the liver cleanses itself so we don’t need to detox. That is true, however we should be eating a wide variety of all of those foods that naturally help the liver on a daily basis. The sad reality is that most people do not, and eat a variety of foods that bring very little nutrition to the body, therefore making the liver even more sluggish.

Let’s give our liver a little help by giving it some delicious and nutritious food, shall we? 🙂

This easy recipe is perfect to start your day!

Enjoy!

Reduce your exposure to pesticides and synthetic chemicals and toxins by using as much organic ingredients as you can, especially celery, which is on the Dirty Dozen list.

Clear Skin Smoothie (aka liver cleanser)

  • 1″ piece of ginger, washed (thumb-size)
  • 1/2 – 1″ piece of turmeric, washed
  • 3 organic celery stems, washed
  • 1/2 avocado, flesh taken out
  • 1″ thick slice of pineapple (peeled)

  • a pinch of cayenne

There is no way my liver could do your job. haha But it must be so interesting! Beets are wonderful to help clean the blood by developing new red cells. You should definitely consider adding some celery and lemon to your mornings for your liver. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

There are so many things here I’d have never thought to put in a smoothie. Though, believe it or not, cayennes it not one. I like putting it in my smoothie if I’m feeling stuffed up — especially before a run. Can’t breathe right with a stuffy nose!

Celery makes me gag, but I’d be willing to try this out. Haha. Assuming the celery taste isn’t incredibly strong! Besides that, it sounds really refreshing.

Thanks! I’m trying to break the smoothie barriers 😉 That is a good tip about the cayenne before running. I always have to bring tissues with me when I run in cold weather, it’s almost like it’s cleaning my lungs, and I inevitably have to blow my nose once or twice during the run.
And no worries, you cannot taste the celery at all in this smoothie! It’s there strictly for its health benefits!

MMM This smoothie combo sounds wonderful. I tend to get into a smoothie rut, having the same one every morning. (maybe because I’m not a morning person) 🙂 Time to break out of that rut, and this is one I’m going to try for sure! Thanks for posting.

That’s exactly why I created the Smoothie Challenge, because it’s too easy to fall in a rut, which usually consists of the usual suspect: banana and frozen berries. lol Am I right?! It’s fun to experiment. If you give this a try, please come back to let me know how it went 🙂

Gabby, this is such an innovative smoothie recipe idea! I actually like a similar ingredient combo for green juice (less the avocado!) and I can only imagine how wonderful and creamy this is! The smoothie looks so zesty and I love the brightness of the flavours to help banish the winter blahs (and counteract all the Spanish wine I’ve been drinking lately! Haha). I look forward to keeping up with your Smoothie Challenge!
