Essential oil room spray recipe for a long-lasting room spray. Get 9 room spray blends for the home, work, and travel on a free printable you can download.
I love a good room spray but many are aerosol (hello air quality alerts) and contain a long list of chemical ingredients I can’t pronounce. And the environmentally friendly high-grade room sprays are quite costly. For these reasons I stopped buying room sprays and happily discovered a simple, inexpensive, yet effective way to make a room spray with essential oils.
And I’m not the only one who started making their room spray. DIY room sprays have become increasingly popular for uses around the house, at work, and even during travel.
In fact, once you’ve learned how to make my room spray base recipe you can create a room spray for next to anything:
- Linen Mist
- Car Spray
- Pet Deodorizer
- Hotel Room Spray
- Homework Hour Mist
- Entryway Spray
- Before You Go Spray
- Mudroom Mask
- Bathroom Freshener
- Stinky Shoe Cleanser
- Bedtime Spritz
- Trash Can Spray
- Mood Lifting Atomizer
- Closet Refresher
- Morning Restart
As you can see this room spray base recipe can function in so many ways. It is completely customizable to suit your needs and scent preferences. That’s what I love most about it!

What essential oils make a room smell good?
Asking what essential oils make a room smell good, is almost like asking what kind of ice cream tastes good… Nearly all essential oils could make a room smell better, but the key is blending them into powerful scent combinations.
Coming from experience, I know if you’re new to essential oils it can seem overwhelming to know what oil to use. This is why I recommend starting with an essential oil blending wheel to guide you. Use it to test out your essential oil blend ideas until you become familiar enough with what works well together.
And when you do find a blend of essential oils you love, write it down. So, you can make it again! With a little practice, you’ll have your own go-to blends everyone will be asking for.
And soon you’ll have DIY room sprays all over the house because they are so easy to customize for rooms, seasons, or even your mood. (Speaking of which, don’t miss my cozy-season diffuser blends!)
How do you make essential oil room spray?
Room sprays are easy to create at home. All you need is a few key ingredients to make a room spray base to add essential oils too.
Because, here’s the thing – oils don’t mix with water. You need to bind the essential oils with the right ingredient for a room spray that lasts.
How do you make a long lasting room spray? According to Martha Stewart, combining 1 part witch hazel with 1 part distilled water helps the essential oils bind and makes the scent last longer. Because witch hazel acts as an emulsifier for the essential oils and water. (If you don’t have witch hazel, vodka will also work as an emulsifier.)
Moreover one of the best things about using an essential oil room spray is that it doesn’t just mask or cover up odors. Essential oils actually deodorize and can help boost your mood too, unlike basic aerosol air fresheners.
Essential Oil Room Spray Recipe
Making your own essential oil room spray truly couldn’t be easier when you’ve got your room spray base recipe covered. It’s just a four-step process from there: essential oil – witch hazel – water – shake.
Here’s How to Make a Room Spray with Essential Oils
Start with 25 to 35 drops of essential oils:
Choose from a room spray recipe below or combine your own blend of 25 to 35 drops of essential oils into a glass spray bottle. (Check out the Oily Chic Look Book for lots of spray bottle options, including the bottles in the photos.)
Add 1 part witch hazel:
Fill the spray bottle halfway up with witch hazel, which is one part. And remember, if you don’t have witch hazel, vodka will also work as an emulsifier.
Fill with 1 part distilled water:
Next, fill the remaining half of the bottle with distilled water.
Shake to blend:
Last, add the lid to the spray bottle, and with the nozzle closed, shake gently to blend. (It’s not a bad idea to shake the bottle before each use for an even scent.)
Essential oil room sprays are so easy to put together, which makes them an ideal homemade gift for any occasion – new baby, new home, new job, new husband – you get the picture.
